Just received a diagnosis? You're not alone.
A Down Syndrome diagnosis can bring many emotions. LDSA is here to connect you with support, information, and other families who understand what you're going through.
Down Syndrome occurs when a person is born with an extra copy of chromosome 21. There are three types, each with the same characteristics but different causes.
Type 01
Trisomy 21
~95%
The most common type. An extra copy of chromosome 21 is present in every cell of the body.
Type 02
Translocation
2-3%
An extra part or whole copy of chromosome 21 is attached to a different chromosome.
Type 03
Mosaicism
~1%
An extra chromosome 21 is present in only some cells of the body, not all.

When the extra chromosome occurs
No matter which type your child has, think of your baby first as a child. Down Syndrome is just part of who they are — not the whole story.
